How to get renters insurance

Before we talk about how to get renters insurance, let’s go over the basics: what it covers, how much coverage you need, and how much it costs.

What does renters insurance cover?

A basic renters insurance plan offers four main coverages, or protections. They are:

  1. Contents Coverage. This protects your belongings—the “contents” of your place—from a range of damage-causing incidents, known as covered “perils.” Common covered perils include fire, theft, lightning strikes, burst pipes, and other events that may cause significant damage to your things. If your belongings are harmed by a covered peril, your insurance company will help pay for repairs and replacements.
  2. Loss of Use. If a covered peril renders your place uninhabitable, your insurance company can put you up in temporary accommodations. They can even help foot the bill for some reasonable additional living expenses, like the takeout bills that’ll pile up while you’re without a kitchen.
  3. Personal Liability. This coverage kicks in if you damage someone else’s property. For example, if you accidentally start a fire at your place, your liability coverage will pay for the resulting damage to your building (your landlord’s property), or your neighbor’s things. Liability can also help cover legal bills if someone decides to come after you for additional damages, or if you’re held liable for personal injury resulting from an accident.
  4. Medical Payments to Others. If a guest is ever accidentally injured at your place, this coverage can help pay their medical bills.

In addition, Jetty offers bonus coverages, called Power-Ups. Known as “endorsements” in the insurance industry, Power-Ups are additional protections that you can choose to add on to your base plan. For example, if you own any particularly expensive items, like an engagement ring, the Personal Valuables Power-Up will provide the extra coverage you need. Or, if you’re looking for extra protection for your laptop or smartphone, you can add on the Portable Electronics Power-Up and you’ll be covered in the event of loss, water damage, or shattered screens.

How do I make sure I’m fully covered?

Renters insurance payouts are subject to certain limits, so it’s important to make sure you’re insured for the correct amount. Let’s say the total value of your belongings is $20,000, but you only purchase $5,000 in contents coverage. Your monthly insurance payments will be cheaper, but you’ll only be partially protected. If a fire tears through your place and destroys all of your belongings, the most you’ll get out of your insurance company is $5,000 (minus your deductible). It’ll be up to you to find the money to replace the other $15,000 in lost belongings.

How much is renters insurance?

We’ve got good news. All of the protection we’ve been talking about is a lot cheaper than you’d think. The thing is, renters insurance isn’t one-size-fits-all, so it can vary in price; the monthly cost of renters insurance can range anywhere from $5 per month to $35 per month, depending on a number of factors.
