Protect your electronics with renters insurance—not AppleCare
Real talk. How many times have you sent your iPhone skittering across the sidewalk in the last month? Do you keep an extra bag of rice in your pantry, just in case your phone has another unfortunate encounter with a body of water? If you’re an accident-prone iPhone owner, or really just any iPhone owner (those are some expensive pieces of hardware), you may have wondered whether AppleCare is enough protection for your iPhone—and your investment.
The truth is, for many common situations, AppleCare offers very limited coverage, and you can get much more bang for your buck if you protect your phone through your renters insurance. Here, we break down questions like: Does AppleCare cover theft? Will AppleCare cover a cracked screen? Is renters insurance worth it? And the answers may surprise you.
Which is more affordable: Jetty Renters Insurance or AppleCare?
On the surface, it might seem like the cost for Jetty Renters Insurance and AppleCare+ is about the same—which could be true if you’re looking at cost alone. But when you start to look at value, the answer is a bit different.
How much is renters insurance? With Jetty Renters Insurance, you can insure the contents of your apartment, then add what we call our Portable Electronics Power-Up, which is additional coverage for your portable electronic devices, for a total of about $108 a year, depending on where you live and how much stuff you have. For that price, you’re protecting all of your belongings and all of your portable electronics (laptops, tablets, e-readers, etc.)—including your phone.
So how much does AppleCare cost? To answer that, it’s important to know the difference between AppleCare and AppleCare+. AppleCare is a basic one-year warranty. It’s free—but it doesn’t cover much beyond a malfunctioning button, a dead screen, or anything else due to a manufacturing defect (i.e., if it’s Apple’s fault, not yours). AppleCare+ is meant to make up for that. With AppleCare+, you get 24/7 technical support for software issues via phone or text. If you’re having hardware issues, AppleCare+ includes coverage for “accidental damage” (more on what that means below), but it’ll cost you: Two years of AppleCare+ will run you $150 to $200, depending on which phone you own, more if you opt for AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss.
On its face, that seems on par with Jetty Renters Insurance, which can run anywhere from $60 to $200+ per year (depending on your level of coverage), but don’t forget: With Jetty, you’re paying that amount to insure all of your belongings, not just your phone—making it a better value. Plus, you’ll need to buy a separate AppleCare+ policy for each of your Apple devices, while just one Jetty Portable Electronics Power-Up will cover all of your portable electronics, whether they’re made by Apple or not.
It’s also important to note that AppleCare+ coverage only protects your iPhone for two years, or your laptop for three. If you decide to keep your device for longer, you’re out of luck. With Jetty’s Portable Electronics Power-Up, you can protect any device, of any age. (You can learn more about AppleCare+ for iPhones here and for Macs here.)
Will AppleCare cover a cracked screen? Will Jetty Renters Insurance?
If you have Jetty’s Portable Electronics Power-Up, your plan will fully cover repairs—including a cracked screen—after you pay a small deductible. With AppleCare+, your costs will vary, and coverage is limited. If you have AppleCare+ and need to bring your phone in for a fix, repairing a cracked screen will run you $29 plus tax, while any other repairs will cost you $99 plus tax. It’s important to note that you’re only covered for a total of two incidents of accidental damage. That’s right, two. If you’re at all accident prone, you’ll likely blow through those before you know it, and then you’ll be stuck paying out of pocket—at least $150 to fix a cracked screen, and even more for other issues.
Here’s how it works with Jetty Renters Insurance: If your iPhone breaks and you have Jetty’s Portable Electronics Power-Up, you can take that cracked screen to the nearest Apple store for repairs. After a $50 deductible, we’ll pay the remainder of the repair or replacement fee. (Although you can take your phone to another electronics repair shop, we prefer you go straight to the mothership—it helps to ensure that you’ll get the best possible fix for your issue.) Oh, and with Jetty, you can repair your phone an unlimited number of times.
Does AppleCare+ cover cracked Macbook screens?
Sort of. The coverage would be almost the same as it would in the case of a cracked iPhone. AppleCare+ for laptops is a three-year plan that will protect your laptop for up to two incidents of “accidental damage” (e.g., breaking it or spilling on it). Depending on the kind of damage, you’ll either have to pay a service fee of $99 (for screen damage or external enclosure damage), or $299 (for other damage), plus applicable tax. Jetty, on the other hand, does cover a cracked laptop screen (and any other accidental damage)—you’d just need the Portable Electronics Power-Up.
Does AppleCare cover theft? What happens if you lose your phone?
You won’t get theft or loss coverage with AppleCare or the basic AppleCare+ plan, but Apple does offer an upgraded version of AppleCare+ with theft and loss protection. Still, the question of “Does AppleCare cover theft?” is still not straightforward, as the plan comes with a few caveats.
First, AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss still only covers up to two incidents total. So whether your phone is accidentally damaged, lost, or stolen, any claim will count against the same two-incident limit.
Second, you can only file a theft or loss claim if Find My iPhone was enabled on your device at the time it went missing. Plus, if you’re hoping to replace your phone under AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss, be prepared for a high deductible. Depending on the type of iPhone you own, you’ll be paying anywhere from $199-$269 out-of-pocket before your coverage kicks in.
On the other hand, if you’re protected by Jetty Renters Insurance and your iPhone is stolen, you can file a claim online, and we’ll cover the replacement value of your device. With our Portable Electronics Power-Up, you’ll also be covered if you lose your phone. Either way, your deductible is just $50. To help better paint the picture for you, we’ve broken down the differences in price and coverage for Jetty Renters Insurance, AppleCare+, and AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss. To keep things simple, we’re making the comparison using two different Apple devices: the iPhone X and a 15-inch Macbook Pro.

If, after all that, you’re thinking about just avoiding the decision all together and opting for the free AppleCare, consider this: Apple’s one-year warranty is extremely limited. It covers “defects in materials and workmanship”; as mentioned above, this just means issues that are Apple’s fault, not yours. That’s great if your battery randomly stops working after a month, but not so great if you drop your phone, accidentally get it wet, lose it, or break it.
So, who do you think wins the Jetty vs. AppleCare+ smackdown? We think it’s pretty clear. Choose Jetty Renters Insurance with the Portable Electronics Power-Up—we’ve got you covered.
